Giganode Liver Forum March 12, 2026
The GigaNode Liver Forum is a recurring, interactive online seminar series dedicated to the most challenging and controversial questions in the care of patients with liver disease. It brings together medical professionals with a special interest in liver disease and transplantation to debate grey zones, challenge diverging guidelines, and translate evolving evidence into practical perioperative decisions.
Over the first four editions, the Forum will focus on high‑impact, cross‑disciplinary topics:
- Periprocedural hemostasis management of cirrhotic patients
- Preoperative evaluation of cirrhotic patients before non‑transplant surgery
- Cardiovascular assessment before liver transplantation
- “Too sick to transplant?” – decision‑making at the limit
Each 90‑minute session is built around a small expert panel and a limited number of invited participants to ensure genuine discussion rather than one‑way lectures. Participants are expected not only to listen, but to challenge, question, and share their own institutional practice.
First Edition – March 12, 2026
Topic: Periprocedural hemostasis management of cirrhotic patients
Date & Time: March 12, 2026, 18:00–19:30 CET (online, Zoom)
Format:
- 6 international experts in a virtual Zoom classroom
- 15 invited participants with camera and microphone on, actively contributing to the discussion
Cirrhotic patients undergoing invasive procedures sit at the crossroads of bleeding and thrombosis risk, where classic coagulation tests fail to tell the full story. This first GigaNode Liver Forum will explore how different centers approach periprocedural hemostasis:
- How should we really interpret INR, platelets, and fibrinogen in cirrhosis?
- When do we transfuse, and when do we withhold blood products?
- What is the role of viscoelastic testing, factor concentrates, and thromboprophylaxis?
- How do current guidelines diverge, and where does expert practice go beyond them?
Cases, polls, and short “provocation statements” from the panel will be used to trigger discussion rather than to provide a single “correct” answer. The goal is to leave with sharper questions, clearer risk–benefit thinking, and practical strategies you can adapt to your own setting.
How to Participate
The interactive format works best with a small, committed group. We therefore invite colleagues who are directly involved in the perioperative and procedural management of cirrhotic patients (hepatology, anesthesia, intensive care, interventional radiology, surgery, transfusion medicine) to apply for one of the 15 active seats.
If you would like to:
- Share your real‑world experience and local protocols
- Present a brief case or dilemma
- Challenge current dogma and guideline recommendations
…we encourage you to apply using the form on this page. Please briefly describe your role, institutional background, and why you are interested in this topic. Selected participants will receive a confirmation and Zoom access details by email.
Even if you are not selected as an active discussant for this edition, you will be able to follow future sessions in the GigaNode Liver Forum series as we move on to preoperative evaluation, cardiovascular assessment before liver transplantation, and the “too sick to transplant?” dilemma.
