Professor James Isbister did his undergraduate medical training at the University of NSW. His postgraduate training in internal medicine and haematology was at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney and subsequently in London at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School. Prof Isbister’s main consultant career has been at Royal North Shore Hospital as Head of the Department of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine from 1983 and appointed Consultant Emeritus in 2004.
Prof Isbister has had a broad range of clinical, research and teaching interests in haematology, transfusion medicine and patient blood management. He was chief examiner in haematology and transfusion medicine for the Royal College of Pathologist of Australasia from 1989-1995. He has and continues to serve on National and International Advisory Committees and was chair of the Advisory Committee and a board member of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service (2004-2010). He is currently chair of the Australian and New Zealand massive transfusion registry at Monash University and chair of the National Blood Authority Patient Blood Management Implementation steering committee.
Professor Isbister’s professional contributions have been acknowledged with several National and International awards. In 2011 he received a distinguished service award from the Australian Red Cross Society for contributions to the Blood Service and in 2014 was made as a Member of the Order of Australia.
